Seger or Bust
So I’d like to take a step back into my childhood for a moment. Growing up, I was exposed to nothing but Classic Rock while driving with my dad. Sometimes it would be the radio, other times it would be any of the five tapes he had in his truck. Of those five, two were Bog Seger - most notebly Against the Wind and Like a Rock. Now, both of these are 1980s gems, but my heart resides in his 1970s work.
Just this morning, I popped in the always enjoyable live album Nine Tonite - which collects songs spanning both the 1970s and 1980s, recorded in Detroit and Boston. At the end of “You’ll Accompany Me”, Bob yells, much to the crowd’s approval, “It’s great to be back in Boston,” Hell yeah Bob, it IS great to back in Boston. Oh, how I LOVE the live music! Anyway my favorite song, by far, on the album has to be “Fire Lake”. I really don’t have a reason why, or an attachment to the lyrics per say, but something about the delivery of the song really grabs me. The same can almost be said about the “Travelin’ Man/Beautiful Loser” combo off of the 1976 Live Bullet album. However, as this recording is my favorite Seger song of all time, I do have a vested emotional connection to it. Emotional and Romantic in much the same way Kerouac’s On the Road speaks to me. “Traveling Man”, discovering America, meeting interesting people, truely feeling free. Ah, wasn’t college grand? “Beautiful Loser”, in turn, tells the tale of when a person realizes that a decision must be made between continuing down the road of reckless abandon or or pulling off that road into the driveway of responsibility. Ah, isn’t being an adult grand?
On that note, I return to the present…
